Rotary Shaft Encoder

Jan 19, 2004 1 Replies

Hi,

I am looking for any type of sample schematic involving the use of a rotary shaft encoder. Could these, in effect, be used as a "jog wheel"?

Thank you.

Just use two inputs (for quadrature) with 2K~10K pullups. Makers often recommend an RC on each input, but it's not necessary with debounce done in sofware and good ESD design.

On ones like the above, use another input for the push switch. You need to poll at about 400Hz for good results with this type of encoder. It's also possible to use interrupts, triggered from the B line, but it's not as good.
