Hey Spike, Many a good response already. Our local libraries contain some rocketry books and GH Stine's Handbook of Model Rocketry is a pretty covering read.

The NAR page(s) have some very cheap pad and controller plans. Depending on your local, craftshops often put 40% off coupons in the newspaper and around here they sell kits and motors. Something to watch for.

As mentioned,

is a good source, but specifically it's InfoCentral section would be good for some beginner knowledge:

Click on the categories it lists on the left hand side of page. The excellent ninfinger FAQ, Frequently Asked Questions section, is also available there:

as you already did here, ask questions on RMR or on Rocketry Online's Forum section:

Spike,

If you don't have $$$$ don't get into Rocketry. Even the Estes Stuff is EXPEN$IVE any more!

This hobby can be enjoyed on many financial levels. It doesn't take a lot of money to fly model rockets, especially if you get involved with a club that provides GSE. After building a few kits, you should be able to start scratch-building using materials commonly found around the house, inexpensive items from a craft store, or pieces scrounged from a multitude of free resources. Once you do that, most of your rocketry money can be saved for motors.

I will admit that the hobby is a bit addictive, drawing some people deeper and deeper into the "abyss". But self-discipline can overcome that with practice.
