Why couldn't you band together 5 wireledd bases and receivers under different frequencies?

opera is usually faster (especially if you get the older sub floppy sized versions)

Mozilla has more overhead for an extreme slow performer (PC) and a P75 is MAGNITUDES faster than a 75mhz 486

in THIS scenario the mhz are not equal :-)

Can't you have say 5 linksys wireless links (802.11g as a reference) and have them each set to different frequencies and have 5 receiver cards for "striped" bandwidth?

Kinda like the old dual modem schemes.

UNLESS you do something like kazaa does and break up the single transmission into chunks then each chunk could use a different link and the result would be an effective increase in bandwidth.

I think the stripiong software exists and would have to be recompild for the target platform (a G5 Powerbook of course) and as for drivers of airport extreme cards I believe they use PCI-X internally so a PCI expando box wold work fine.

Yes software has to be written for such a project but that is not out of the realm of rmr denisons.

One "nice to have" on a laptop is the data download software for the various altimeters out there. Invariably, someone will thank you for having it.

Multi homing. Used to that with modems when USworst couldn't get the frame up in time. In those cases I used a Shiva land rover with a bunch of modems config'd to keep dial up. I remember discovering at the time that you couldn't get anything above 33k between two 56k modems. You would have to have a, the name fails me, a 'digital modem bank thingy' on the recieving end to get anywhere above 33k. I've also have done it with Netware and NT.

Ironicly, right now I'm on a 56k modem as Qwest has hosed up my DSL circuit. First time in 4 years me using a modem :(

Remember when 1200 baud modems were the bomb? At the time put that with a decent Weiss terminal and you were cruising the net playing with Archie and Veronica and their pet Gopher.

FIRST backup your current hard drive in case you need to reinstall with an upgrade disk later.

just copy everything no need to image into a zip or rar file.

later you can format /s the drive and then just unpack the compressed file and all will be as it is now.

Macs do that now and I believe all real *nix as well.

With a driver to address the transceiver bases as multiple striped services under multi-homing. Maybe. It just can't be all that hard these days with all the simplified programming packages. It's more a matter of playing with it and of course having the vision to even try in the first place. How often are you saddled with a crippled connection? For me way too often.

Yeah, nothing really new with multi homing. It's just routing. Been doing it since the late 80's early 90's with 'super servers'. Tricords, Netframes et all. Multi nics. Used to call it segmenting the network. Gigbit with vlans have the advantage just because it's so simple and clean.

What you could do is lock down(encrypt)the connection between the wireless nics and the base stations and the os will take care of the routing. But think about it, what do you want to accomplish? Just aggregated bandwidth? It is *wireless* after all.

Me too on my old cub scout 50% discount PC/XT. Those were the days :)
