No more Newsgroups at AOL

I received the following message when I clicked off of r.m.r. tonight:

Please Note: The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in early 2005.

For members using AOL over a dial-up connection, you will no longer be able to access Newsgroups. If you have a separate high-speed connection, you can contact your broadband provider to see if they offer Newsgroups. Newsgroup services can often be accessed through a third party reader, such as Mozilla Thunderbird

AOL's usenet server has been screwed up since Christmas. I've tried repeatedly to get them to do something about it, unfortunately this isn't what I had in mind.

I've been using Google Groups for the past few days, which is really sucky but better than nothing. Sorry Jerry, can't get rid of me that easy! :)

Normally I'll stay out of the sniper sessions here, non-productive, but I can't get the one scene from Young Frankenstein out of my head that this nudged back to the surface.

"Where'd you get the brain?" "From someone named....Abby....Normal....."

Use this server: news.flugmodellbau.de

Works fine in O.E. (don't know about other clients) It's free. This server doesn't do binaries, nor does it carry a lot of newsgroups. It has RMR, and allows you a non-google method of reading and posting.

AOL doesn't care. If they cared, they wouldn't have discontinued Usenet access. Content, service and customer satisfaction are not a part of their corporate vocabulary.
