AOL to stop carrying newsgroups

Logged in to check RMS and got the following message:

Please Note: The AOL Newsgroup service will be discontinued in early 2005.

For members using AOL over a dial-up connection, you will no longer be able to access Newsgroups. If you have a separate high-speed connection, you can contact your broadband provider to see if they offer Newsgroups. Newsgroup services can often be accessed through a third party reader, such as Mozilla Thunderbird

And for you AOL folks don't have a seperate news server, I've been using news.individual.net (formerly news.cis.dfn.de) for - eh, years, sometime after I saw Al mention it.

Bring your own newsreader, but the server (no binaries) has been trouble free... as well as just flat out *free.*

Yea, I've seen the notices too, and I'm not happy. Any idea what we do for Alt.binaries stuff? I've tried googling alt.binaries, and all I come up with is Guba, and that means I have to start paying for AB newsgroups, like the modeling board we use for pics. Screw that!!

Hey Osama, check your six

I recently swithced from aol to comcast 4 mbps broadband. Comcast uses Giganews, and I get 1 gig a month for free. More than I use, so it's worth it.

I actually switched so I could play online games, Flight simulations, and Call Of Cuty.

I could never go back now !!!

Earthlink might not be far behind AOL. I haven't seen a bulletin, but someone on the net mentioned they readwhere EL would no longer add new groups.

It's just a matter of time. :-(

Hmmm, think of all the time I'll save--I might actually get some modeling done. Much as I like a lot of the folks here, the content has really tailed off compared with five years ago. I'm not sure I'm willing to go through a lot of gyrations (or to pay extra) to access this or other ngs. Earthlink has been pretty good (I think I've been using it for eight years, which is like an eternity for this kind of product) and it really hasn't given me much reason to switch, so I'm doubtful that ng loss would make me jump.

4 mbps for starters !! Makes a BIG difference in online games ! Only Cox cable is faster (5 mbps)

For flight simulators, or FPS games (Call Of Duty :) speed is everything.

Giganews has worked just fine as well, and I get maybe 2 - 3 pieces of spam a week, which is better than aoHell. It also is now combined with our cable bill.

Not the cheapist, but is definately the easiest way to broadband for me right now.

You got a better idea for the Wash DC area please let me know...

If you want ABMS skip Usenetbinaries.com. They haven't updated that since around Jan 7th. They seem to update alt.binaries.picures.aviation on a regular basis, but as to how complete it is, I have no idea. I like this over AOL's newsgroups because you can see the pic before you download it. It's free if you stay below a certain number of MB per day, but I don't recall exactly how many MB you download in one day. Any other freebies out there worth checking? Don McIntyre Clarksville, TN

At alomst $80/month in Montg'y County, MD Comcast isn't gonna happen here. For me DSL isn't an option because there are fiber optics between me and the switch.

Started in August, $20 @ mo. for the first 6 months, than $41 a month on top of cable TV bill after that. Got 3 free Logitech webcams also....

But to fly online (IL2 Forgotten Battles) is worth it to me. That and the speed when looking at webpages, makes the internet soo much more enjobable !

That $80 was without being a cable TV subscriber. That just ain't gonna happen, even if for another few bucks a month I get cable TV.

$41/month without cable TV I'd go for, not going for $80/month with no cable TV they can get stuffed.
