Besides the fact that the APA actually defined a condition called ADD/ADHD, there are a couple of statistical correlations, but no direct correlation yet (that I'm aware of).
Drug use rates (point for shockie!), low birth weights, increased fatty acid levels in mothers, and increased sugar comsumption in toddlers have been mentioned in the literature. A lot of correlations seem to involve the diet of either the parents or infants. I've also seen the usual suspects blamed; pollutants (nature-based causes) and single parent families (nurture-based causes).
It might be interesting to note that the percentage of spec ed students as a whole has not increased nearly as much as the percentage of spec ed students diagnosed with ADHD. There has been more of a shift from other disorders into ADHD than there has been an increase in primary ADHD cases themselves.
