I really don't know. I'm only familiar with ADHD in the context of teaching techniques here in Colorado.

One parenting trick I found is to remind the kids that when I get old and cranky, I'm going to come live with the one that gave me the most trouble growing up.

You are right but the timing was such that a number of people cancelled theier plans to attend because it was so close to the launch date. That's where the problem was - no consideration for the timing of events that were happening.

Gary, It's perfectly understandable that you wouldn't know what I was talking about initially because you haven't experienced it in your professional life. You work in a school district that, I'm assuming here, probably isn't dominated (read controlled) by the NEA. Here in MI, the heart of the NEA, I could tell you verifiable stories that would make your head swim. For a good starting point, I'd suggest that you get a hold of two articles about the NEA that were published in Forbes several years back. To give you a tone of the piece, one was called " The NEA: National Extortion Association". Needless-to-say, it wasn't very flattering to the union. ;-)

Keep fighting for the kids; teaching SHOULD be a noble profession.

No single swats for us. My brothers and I got plenty of spankings and, I dare say, probable earned more than we actually got. We wuz hooligans, I tell you, just absolute young tear abouts.

Well, the NEA is certainly involved and I DON'T EVEN want to get into unions.

As I mentioned, my district has had a dedicated spec ed program in place

for many years and, except for budget issues, we are left pretty much alone.

The regular schools are fairly supportive of us because we offer a place for them to send the real "problem" kids to, so we are spared much of the day-to-day NEA politics. Our district, and, I believe, a district in Alabama, may be the only two with such programs as a regular part of the public school system.

With very few exceptions, the kids we get DESERVE a program like this. Its sorta ironic that the simple "troublemaker" students will rant all day long about how its not their fault. The kids with real LD/ED will not, but in their case, it isn't.

Here is a story. A long, long time ago in a city quite far away, my mother had planted tulips along our driveway (which was quite long). My brothers and I thought it would be great fun to take my dad's golf clubs and "play golf" with the tulips.

I'll never do that again...

There once was a prevailing belief that criminals possessed "the XYY chromosome", but that was debunked years ago. Personally, I believe in the "bad seed". >;-)

ADD/ADHD has been around for a LONG time. The problem is until the current generation, it was never diagnosed as an actual disorder. Kids were just labeled "disruptive troublemakers". That's what I was for a significant part of my youth. Most of school was boring, and my mind was always off elsewhere. Probably on rockets.

And my parents certainly never touched drugs or abused alcohol. Nor did friends of ours who have an ADD kid.
