It appears, from the postcard that I just got in the mail for my Squadron subscription renewal, that the 2004 Kit of the Year is the Academy F/A-18C. Not a bad choice. Sure, it was released in 2003, but it beats their usual shenanigans where they pick a kit nobody has seen yet!
Thoughts?
It's not my scale and I've got a Hornet ready to be built, but everytime I look at it . . .it looks better and better. When you want it just because it looks like plastic perfection, tha'st a kit of the year.
I can agree with that...I could also see the 1/32 F-105 kits from Trumpeter as serious runners up.
But then, I'm using my own criteria and I still have no real feel for what Squadron's criteria are...and now I'm even more confused by what you point out about the "posthumus-year" awarding...
It's not my scale, not my subject (boring grey aircraft - blahh) and not even in reach financially (to be realistic!) but I'm thinking about selling some stuff (a kidney, anyone?) to bring one home to roost.... or should that be nest... or whatever hornets do at home. Anyway, I think I want one...

There's plenty of kits that aren't my scale, aren't my subject, don't think I could afford, etc. that I would have zero issue with being "kit of the year" based on engineering and completeness alone. Trumpeter's K5 Leopold is the latest example (though I'm now sure I HAVE to get one) and the Tamiya Swordfish was the first and best example I can think of.
I've already got one Academy F/A-18C, and I'm EAGERLY..DROOOLINGLY...awaiting release of the D kit. Got lucky this year and it just happens to be my scale and my subject. But that's just me...
