Quick comment, the 455 was gone by the late 70s due to the gas crunch, not because it wouldn't fit under the hood. If a Pontiac has room for a 326ci V-8, it has room for a 455. Pontiac didn't use small and big blocks like Chevy and Ford did.

Another quick comment, Pontiac was using the Olds 403 in automatic Firebirds by the late 70s (Pontiac engines in the manual ones). Don't know if the Bandit car in the movies was an auto or stick.

I had a 78 Trans Am, and this thread brings back some memories. It was an automatic, and those tires would spin like crazy if too much foot got on the gas. An incredibly over-powered car.
