I never forgot the tale a neighbor of mine used to tell, The first of the Japanese bases in the Aleutians to be re-taken was a very nasty fight. U.S. Troops not well equipped for cold weather operations and the Japanese troops fought to the last man. Massacre Bay anyone?? Anyway, his unit was in the first wave sent in on the invasion of the second Japanese base and talk about anti-climax! The Japanese had pulled out under one of the famous Aleutian fogs and the only thing that greeted them on the beach was a dog whom the Japanese had left behind. Instead of a big fight all there was was a hungry dog begging for something to eat.

massacre bay was acyually named as the place where some russin trappers murdered a bunch of aleut indians.

FYI: I believe the book you are referring to is titled "The Thousand Mile War" by Brian Garfield, not "The Thousand Yard Stare". "The Thousand Mile War" is about the Aleutians Campaign. There is another book titled "The Thousdand-Yard Stare" by James Soular that is about the Vietnam War.
