Attitudes to modelling

If 1/72 is god's scale and 1/48 is the dark side, what would 1/144 be?

A bit of advice:Don't go cheap on the magnifying light. I bought two cheapies in a year. The one that have now is about ready for an overhaul or replacement after three years. The hinges wear out and the rods holding everything together bend after awhile.

For the ageing 1/144 crew I recommend a set of magnifier glasses. I havn't bought a set yet, but have tried them at shows and that's my next purchase. Wonder if I can use my AARP card for a discount?

Yeah,

that's what I've got to start doing when I get back home to my REAL stash. I'm living on Guam nd had to bring a small selection of my 'disposable' kits with me to build. I've built four of them and, except- ing the 1/72 Airfix F-104, they are some of my best work ever. I set out with the express purpose of NOT GIVING A DAMN what they would look like, except that I wanted to have fun. Not to build a con- test winner, finish a contracted kit, or make a gift for someone. But to just HAVE FUN. They are the best models that I've built in the last three years! They are all old, long inthe tooth kits, crappy molds, and joints you could drive a semi truck through, but I made them alll look beautiful!

I'm happy to have refound the hobby that I missed so much while I was actually doing it for the last decade.

Check out the mag. light (circular fluorescent with the articulated arm) sold by Micro-Mark. I got mine 3 years ago for USD69.00 plus a few bucks for shipping. All the adjustment points have Teflon pinch washers that hold the joints in place. You'll need to shorten a few paint brushes if you want to paint under magnification. The light is table top-clamp-mounted and has a very nice convenience outlet at the base of the main arm. It's great for checking panel lines and inspecting paint jobs. Cheers, Bruce

I will second Bruce's endorsement of the Mag-Lite. I turned 68 last month and the peepers ain't what they used to be (or some other parts for that matter). I acquired my mag lite some years ago. I found it in the trash at work. The electrical lab boys had thrown it out because the bulb had burned out and the wiring had frayed. I took it home, re-wired it and bought a new bulb. I have never figured out why the bright boys in the electrical lab couldn't do what a draftsmen did but hey! I came out ahead so I'm not complaining.

I bought a magnifying visor off ebay a month or so ago. "The Buy it Now" price was $14.95 and the shipping was $5. I didn't expect much, but it was better than I expected. I don't know why I never thought to got one before.
