Big Kit Attractions?

Question

So, how many of you have problems storing larger kits in your collection? I know it'll depend on what you build but I seem to be drawn to large items - several Monogram 1/48th B-17's, B-24's, B-29, four 1/48th Italeri C-130's of various release (including one in a five-foot-long box!), two 1/24th Trumpeter P-51's, one Airfix 1/24th Stuka, a slew of 1/32nd jets and props... Just wondering as kits that can make it into big, anonymous brown boxes draw less attention than an Airfix Stuka!

I have two storage areas. One is a walk in sub-attic (off the BR/ model/computer room) is where the bulk of things, along with X-mas and camping stuff is stowed. The other is a walk in closet off the same BR. In there are finished and larger kits that I can't get into the 'proper' area in the attic. The 7' shelves are full and so is the floor space.

Storage boxes for those 1/32s and 1/24s and large 1/48s range from computer/monitor boxes to the 4 footers my plotter came in.

I have quite a few in a wardrobe box...but I have space under one of my benches that catches the overflow.  Or the boxes I just plain like to look at.

I have a large collection of unbuilt extra large models. I haven't built them because since I still move every 2-3 years, they would not survive the move. Some of the big kits I have are the 1/16 Tiger I and Tiger II by Tamiya, Trumpeter 1/32 A-10A, 1/72 Testors B-2, 1/35 AMT/Ertl ProShop X-Wing.

I consider these "retirement projects". Kits I will work on after I retire and stop moving.

That brings up an interesting point.  We all know how sensitive plasticis to heat but I am wondering about cold.  Has anyone stored unbuiltkits in an unheated garage or storage unit / shed wit any success?

The vast majority of my kits were stored in an attached, but unheatedstorage shed and garage in Massachusetts for over 3 years (sufferedthrough heat and cold). No ill effects, but it wasn't for a reallyprolonged period of time.

Funny...I'm the same way...meaning to build a display case into a wall in my "dream house" before I start building my 1/32 stash...which to date includes:

Trumpeter: A-10A, F-105G, Mig-15, Mig-17, Mig-19, Mig-21, Su-27, F4U-1, P-38, and 2 x F4F-4

Tamiya: F-15C, F-15E, F-4D, 2 x F-4J, 2 x F-14A

Revell: 2 x F-4E, JAS 39 2 x F-14A (one built, one under construction)

Hasegawa: F/A-18A, F-86, Fw 190A, Fw 190D, Me 109G6, Me 109G-14, Me 109K, P-51D

Academy: F/A-18C

...off the top of my head. More on the way...as they are released.

I've been contemplating one - starting one of my Trumpeter Wildcats. The one I plan to convert to an FM-2 sub-chaser. I have the resin engine for the conversion and most of the extras I need. Just want to get my museum projects out of the way first.
