box review, Airfix 1/48 scale deHavilland Mosquito Nf.30

I finally got my hot little hands on the new Nf.30 version of the Mosquito from Airfix. Nice effort! It is essentially their Mk.VI kit with a new wing upper surface, engine nacelles and fuselage nose. These are included in one large and one small new sprues. The new wing has engraved panel lines and the plank like wing stiffeners are gone. You will still have to file them off the lower surfaces but that should be about a 5 minute job. The fuselage moldings have been modified by having a line engraved on the inside showing where to cut off the fighter bomber nose to fit the late night fighter radar nose. There also is a set of 50 gallon underwing tanks on the new sprues. There will be a few parts for the spares box when you are finished this kit. A set of eight rockets and rails will be the most useful. In addition there will be the old wing upper surfaces, nacelles and underwing bomb racks. If you are modeling one of the 100 Group night intruders, you might want to use the underwing bomb racks in place of the 50 gallon underwing tanks. These were sometimes used in the campaign against the German night Fighter airfields. Ever hear the term "Moskito Panic"? The decal sheet covers an aircraft from 239 Squadron, 100 Group, an aircraft from the 416th Night Fighter Squadron, U.S.A.A.F., and a postwar bird from the Belgian Airforce's 10th Fighter Wing. Those Belgian markings will really make for a bright model. Some people will complain that this isn't up to Tamiya standards. Maybe not, but a competent Modeler can end up with a Tamiya quality result, he will just have to take a little more time and care with his work. And the price is well below tamiya $$.

Now for the Mk.XVI Bill Shuey

As an adder to this, for those who don't have a kit for a Mosquito Mk.17/19 in their collection and want one, this kit will give you one for less $$ than the Tamiya kit. You simply use the original wing/nacelle parts with the new radar nose.
