Handling Question

Since most of my models are aircraft with either flat or semi-gloss overcoat finishes, handling them causes little trouble. However, on an auto with a glossy finish that has properly cured and dried, been sanded and polished, is handling with bare hands a major threat? If fingerprints are left, will they wipe off this finish or will they mar the surface permanently? As always, thanks in advance.

Hi Mike;

I think the problem would be the other way around.

Flat and, to a degree, semi gloss have a "rough" surface and handling would little by little "polish" or burnish the surface. On the other hand, gloss can take more abuse and if properly finished, a good and tender cleaning should suffice.

I don't deal with glossy surfaces much, but I have encountered a problem on finishes that I thought were fully cured if I held the model in one location too long by having my fingerprints sort of "melt" into the finish.

I use a plastic bag over my hands or you could use plastic gloves

If you handle it beflre the gloss paint's completely dry, nothing will prevent marring of a super glossy finish, such as on most car models. That said, if you get a couple pairs of thin cotton gloves if should protect the mmodels from finger oils, etc. Just remember to wash them often (hence, getting more than one pair).
