Tank and AFV 1/35 modelers have kits with realistic surface structures"for ages"..However, there are NO (NONE!!) aircraft models that have that! Even ongrand scales (1/32, 1/24) kit manufacturers produce ultra smooth panelsurfaces with very fine engraved panel lines that are totallyunrealistic :-(((Come on Tamiya and Trumpeter, I'd like to see a model that replicate"the real thing" and not just that technical plans..Emil

How Long?I am afraid that we already had that but moved away to the current recessedline, smooth as a babies bottom menatlity. Look at the way kits used to bemade with small rivet detail and raised lines. While the raised lines are nomore correct than recessed lines, the rivet detail alot of times was.Personally you pick your poison. Want rivet detail then look to an olderproduct. Want ease of construction and more finesse then go current state ofthe art. Remember when you model you are making a representation of anactual item, not duplicating it exactly.Cheers,Max

That's a great example!! The way the light creates specular effects on the uneven, dimpled, irregular surface (hope I worded that right) is such a huge part of the overall appearance of a plane. I agree that its effect is diminished in smaller scales (1/72) and even nearly invisible in 1/144. It would add so much to a kit's visual appeal if you could duplicate that effect. Maybe if you could produce a topcoat with variations in its reflectivity accross its surface??

This is why alu_foil covered models are so good looking! You cannot make the foil to perfectly cover a plastic surface, hence the "natural" look..

I have never successfully foiled but I'm becoming very keen to try it again. What if you foiled first then put a high gloss color coat over some portion of it? Depending on the subject, you could probably get a pretty decent effect in 1/48 and bigger. Hmmmmm...
