That's a great example!! The way the light creates specular effects on the uneven, dimpled, irregular surface (hope I worded that right) is such a huge part of the overall appearance of a plane. I agree that its effect is diminished in smaller scales (1/72) and even nearly invisible in 1/144. It would add so much to a kit's visual appeal if you could duplicate that effect. Maybe if you could produce a topcoat with variations in its reflectivity accross its surface??

This is why alu_foil covered models are so good looking! You cannot make the foil to perfectly cover a plastic surface, hence the "natural" look..

I have never successfully foiled but I'm becoming very keen to try it again. What if you foiled first then put a high gloss color coat over some portion of it? Depending on the subject, you could probably get a pretty decent effect in 1/48 and bigger. Hmmmmm...
