OT: USS Hornet Museum Question

was thinking of taking my kids, ages 5 & 8 to visit it. They've never been on a ship before.

Are they gonna get bored by all the static displays or will the size of the ship, etc blow them away....

any advice from visitors would be appreciated.

thx - Craig

Craig:

My son and I spent the night aboard the Hornet with his Cub Scout group and had a great time. There's a lot to see and most of the kids seemed to have a good time. The first thing they all noticed was the size of the ship when walking towards the dock.

The ship has volunteers on board that provide daily tours. It's a "living" history lesson to hear one of the volunteers describe life in the Navy 30 or more years ago.

We especially liked the "ghost stories" that were told late at night before we went to bed.

Another point of interest is the Western Aerospace Museum located near the Oakland Airport

You've never been to Berkeley for a free speech rally.

Footnote to modeling history:

One of the BerkeleyFree Speech Movement leader Jerry Smith was also the one man operation called Modeler's Journal. His small modeling magazine didn't last long, but was noted for his exceptionally fine color chip series.

Jerry eventually went to work for the army at the Oakland supply depot. Last I heard of him he was living in Grass Valley after a stint in Germany.

The static display is the ship!!! They have some planes in the hangar, and an Apollo isolation system that the returning astronauts were isolated in to prevent rampant moon bugs from taking over the Earth.

The ship is both quite huge and incredibly cramped in places. They should get a kick out of seeing it.

Not off topic, after all: I understand the Alameda Modeling Society meets on the Hornet the first Friday of every month.

If anyone knows better, please feel free to correct me.

Not any more--they are relocating to North Field, Oakland (Western Aerospace Museum, I believe).
