USS Constitution

I am constructing a model of the USS Constitution, and I would want to know if there are portholes at the berth deck (under the gun-deck). Thanks for the aid. Franco.

Yes and No.

Depends on what period of the ship's life you are modeling.

I took a look in Magoun's book "The Frigate Constitution and Other Historic Ships." The hull plans used in the 1927 restoration show the portholes you are asking about. There is a photo of the ship as she appeared as a receiving ship in 1905, and the portholes are clearly visible.

The 1813 model that is in the Peabody Essex museum does not have the portholes, as far as I can tell form the photo in the book. This model was presented by Commodore Hull to the Salem East India Society, and was used a major reference in the 1907 reconstruction of the ship.

The Model Shipways wooden kit is considered to be the best, most accurate model of the ship as she appears today. The model was designed by Ben Lankford, one of the top period ship modelers of our time.

Here's what the Constitution's own web site, referenced earlier, has to say about the berth deck portholes ("airports"):

"Airports" were eventually installed to improve ventilation, but not until around 1811. The "airports" did provide fresh air and light in port, however, they were ordered shut when the ship was underway.

Thanks for the aid.

Perhaps i make a mistake: i put on my model (Mamoli section, scale 1:93), portholes (brass with glass) of 5 mm of diameter.

Have you more details on this airports?

Ciao, Franco.
