Painting road wheels on ISU-152

Hi All,

I'm building an Italeri ISU-152 and have questions about painting of the road wheels (and track). As I understand it, the road wheels had a steel outer rim, i.e. there was no rubber surface in contact with the track. I'm therefore guessing that the road wheel contact surface should be painted some kind of steel color instead of green as a result of wear. I've looked through this newsgroup, as well as some sites on the Net to see how others have painted this tank (or a JS-2), but seen no recommendations regarding how to treat the road wheels. I've also looked at "Stalin's Heavy Tanks 1941-1945" by Zaloga and Kinnear, but it's very difficult to establish the color of the contact surface of the road wheels from the photos.

Any thoughts?

Assuming that they are steel colored, would mounting the wheels on a stick and giving them a spin while they're in contact with a paint brush that has some Steel paint be appropriate? How about rolling them on a surface covered with some Steel paint?

Would the track also wind up with stripes of the same color? Any thoughts on how I could achieve this effect?

Thanks in advance for your help Dan
