I tried using bleach to strip the chrome plating off of a sprue, but the results are less than satisfactory. What other common product can I use?

oven cleaner and castrol supeduper clean have worked for me. ymmv.
I hear brake fluid works well, and that Easy-Off oven cleaner does, too.
409 or Fantastik.
