U-Boots

The book on the Type VII in the "Anatomy of the Ship" series from the Naval Institute Press is the only reference I've found such diagrams in so far - drawings from original U-boat plans. It also contains some of the clearest B&W photos I've seen so far. Highly reccomended.

have you ordered the wooden decks yet?

r.e., the wooden decks. I have the kit and I find myself wondering if they are really worth it? in this scale, when painted, they will hardley be noticed. Now if those decks were left in natural wood like many surface ships decks are it might be worth it.

Nah - I don't think they are correct. From what I've seen, they just duplicated the plastic steel decking in laser-cut ply, and all of the pictures I've seen of wooden decked U-boats to date have planked decks - not a duplicate of the steel in wood. Planked decking would be easy to make from basswood strips...and also cheaper, I'd suspect.

If anyone knows any different, please point us to some pictures.

I have the turned periscopes and gun barrels. The 88 has a band at teh muzzle that isn't right, but I think I can fix it. Got another set on the way...for a second boat.

I think late war boats had a much simpler deck fitted. Just slats with spaces. Probably like the one on the site you posted at
