Cam Mate Problems

Hi,

I have a pin that rides in a groove that has the Cam Mate work one day and then refuses yet another.

I have done this so many times already I am ready to create a "High Tech" sculpture with my workstation!

It is a single extruded continuous curve.

It works sometimes and not others.

It is driving me crazy.

Has anyone used the Cam Mate, in the pin groove scenario? And if so is it working?? And if it is working do you have any pearls of wisdom??? I would settle for a few rocks of wisdom at this point!

Aron,

My cam mates work exactly like yours. So do most peoples'. I heard it will be fixed in SW 2???. That gives them approx. 193 1/2 years to get it right. My VAR told me to "get over it, this is 3D." No help, but sympathy.

Hi,

I did try / do something and got it to work again for now, I hope!

I had an extrude-cut into the back of the groove to clear the pin during installation (think bi-fold closet doors - or - stereo cabinet doors, etc.) The extrude-cut went into the part by a few thousandths, that way when it is machined it does not leave a thin plastic web behind... But I digress...

When I removed the extrude-cute, I could mate up the groove and pin again. Note groove has always been a "continuous smooth curve" (or whatever the verbiage is). But it seems that if anything, (no matter where it) touches the "continuous smooth curve" the mate will fail to work.

I think that it is unreasonable to put this restriction on the cam mate in SolidWorks. It is reasonable that the rough shape may be created in one sketch - let us call it the overall shape sketch. And that another sketch (or feature for that matter) may add fillets or other "tangent & smooth" additions to the "cam" design. That way it can be tweaked if needed without going into one sketch that has it all.

Just thought I would share...
