MARCH2006 Model Challenge

TOP,

Seemed simple enough, took about 20 minutes this morning.

7 surfaces, some circular patterning and knit into a solid. How do I submit the results?

Got it.. a plane, an extrude, 2 cut-extrudes, 2 lofts, a circular pattern, and 2 equations. I could have done without the plane if I didn't want it centered on the origin. It's in the mail, Paul.

I'm be curious to see this. I wonder if it rebuilds faster than my solids method. I'm also curious to see how you set up the truncated faces in 7 surfaces.

Nice. Obviously too easy. :)

Just tell this idiot how to post or send the file, I'd be glad to show you. I'm real ignorant when it comes to how these groups operate, I usually just a lurker.

Thanks. Any ideas for next time?

Not too easy, I think. At least I had to think a lot... I guess my model is far from optimal, since I had to use three axes, two planes, a mirror and three circular patterns... 'duh!

But I did not use any equations, though, and the model has only one dimension.

Oh, I forgot to count the 3 default axes in my template. I used one for my circular pattern,

Paul has a vald email address in his messages. With that you can send him an email by normal methods.

Just out of curiosity, how does one find out about these model challenges? Not that I'm worthy, but it might help to improve my and my colleges skills.

I think TOP just had the idea, and then did it when we sounded interested. It was all here in the ng.

I'm hoping he can post the entries when it's done. Apart from the challenge itself, I always learn something disecting what other people did, in addition to what I learned working out the problem myself.

Keith,

We were beating the subject to death in the Golf Ball discussion. It needed it's own outlet. Depending on interest and participation it will either grow or fizzle. But it is just a newsgroup thing. In a way it is a takeoff on the Model Mania that SW does at SWW, but at least for this challenge the time taken is not as important as the technique used in the solution.

The two solutions offered so far are as different in approach as night and day. And neither is obvious. So don't be afraid to try. This is a head scratcher for most people and that is a good thing (if you have hair).

I must be scratching that spot in the back.

Paul who? I'd like to attend, too; I sent email to TOP (is he Paul?) but I did not get any reply.

Heikko,

I replied. I thought you wanted to participate. I got an email and I think I sent a reply back.

Thanks, could you try to resend? Despite it's obvious non-junkiness the message must have been caught by some junk filter, who knows.

Dale,

OK, I figured out how to see peoples e-mail address in the forum, but when I tried to send the file to you, it got kicked back as undeliverable. A copy got to TOP OK, but he hasn't said much about the solutions offered.

I'm still studying them. We are getting ready for the NISWUG meeting this week so I can't spend a lot of time until that is over.

I came up with yet another solution.

We should add a twist since it seems so easy to many people. How about the ability to vary one or more of the edges and still have the same basic shape?

Can we submit more than one? I wanted to have one without the equations on file.

What do you mean by vary the edge? Make them something other than straight?
