Bachmann EMD GP-40 - getting inside it!!!

Hello all. I'm in the UK and have bought one of these to explore the possibilty of using the all-wheel-drive chassis in a another model (at £17, it has to be worth a go).

Unfortunately, I just can't figure out how to get the body off. If there are any screws, I can't see them..

Can anyone help? I don't want to ruin the model before I decide whether I can use the insides...

Not familiar with that specific model, but most plastic diesels are held onto the frame by tabs at the bottom of the body; to get it off, you just gently pull the sides of the body apart at the bottom to clear the tabs on the frame.

You also didn't say what gauge (HO or N), so I'm assuming HO.

If it's N scale, you should be able to spread the body shell toward the center to release it from the chassis. Some Bachmann (notably Spectrum models) do have screws that need to be undone. The screws are under the fuel tank...pop the plastic fuel tank cover off to reveal the screws.

Thanks for the reply...

Can't see any tabs.prising the body apart hasn't so far released it...

Ah. Yes, it's an HO model.

It's an HO Spectrum model, so, the fuel tank is probably where I should look. Does that just prise off? It seems to have some play in it, but doesn't seem to want to pull off. Perhaps I just need to use a little brute force...

Thanks,

Adrian

The fuel tank was reluctant to release on my N scale models. Slip a thin blade screwdriver or X-acto knife in the joint and twist. You might need to try a couple spots to find the one that allows it to snap off easily. Good luck!

Doesn't the user manual tell you how to do ???

It's likely that it's built like their H16-44, try swinging the trucks around and see if there is any screws visable under the truck, one on each side.

Not so with some of the Spectrum models, the H16-44 for example, has

4 screws located underneath the trucks holding the body to the frame.

You might expect so..., but not as far as I can see. The exploded diagram doesn't seem to help. Then again, maybe I'm just not reading it right.

Anyway, I seem to have it licked now.

Thanks to all those who responded. It looks like the fuel tank is the key. I should have been a bit more brutal with it.

Just curious: how did you get it off? Might be useful info for the next poor slob faced with this problem.
