Benchwork and other layout books?

I'm starting to move from the all-in-my-head phase of layout to actual planning. I know there are a number of different ways to build benchwork. I would like to have a variation in grade so starting with a flat sheet of plywood or foamboard doesn't seem to be the best way to go. What book(s) would you recommend I look at for assistance and ideas on this and other layout planning topics?

Jeff, over on "The Gauge" forum, there is a thread about just that very thing.

Quite an impressive layout. His benchwork is the type I have envisioned and would like more information on specifics as well as where you would go from there as far as scenery etc.

I am thinking along the same lines as he did.

The benchwork I envision would be based on 36"x60" modules. Each module would have six legs, based on 2x2 uprights, each having two 1x1 cross pieces, forming an "X" pattern. The top frame would be 5/8x6, with a cross member at each set of legs

I have put an example up on the layout page of my site.

Kalmbach Publishing: Basic Model Railroading; Practical Guide to Model Railroading; HO Scale Model Railroading; A Realistic Layout for Beginners; Project Railroads You Can Build. These books all cover this and many other related topics, some of which you may not even have thought of yet. :-)

Green Frog Productions has a series of videos on Building A Model Railroad.

holy heck, that's the most time consuming project I have never undertaken but want to lol

I just wish I had that sort of time, insane layouts posted there. I certainly am now energized to roll on my layout (even if it is 10x10 or less lol)

Thanks for the great sige, new favorite

I have a lot of lumber already on hand and like carpentry so the benchwork is no problem to me other than the design. However, thanks for posting as the Sievers benchwork is similar to what I have been envisioning building.
