fotopic net gone out of business (probably)

It seems that the photo hosting site fotopic.net (and other variations) has probably gone out of business, leaving it's users without a host.

Regular readers will know that I have posted relevant model railroad pictures on my personal fotopic site. Their demise has forced me to find an alternative place to show my photos. Having looked at several sites I have chosen to use flickr and am currently uploading most of the 2000+ photos I had on my old site.

Before spending too many hours doing this can you please help me by giving feedback. Have a look at

me know what you think.

Any suggestions on how I can improve it are most welcome, although it may take a little time to incorporate them as I'm still at the bottom of the learning curve.

Thanks

Mike, the picture quality is fine, but I noticed that the response was sometimes a bit slow. But I suspect that's common to all the photo sharing sites. You might consider setting up your own website. A lot of ISPs (at least in the US) provide space for one.

And a little description of each photo would be nice, but I know that's an overwhelming job.

But all in all, great pictures - keep it up.

I'll second that motion. We went to Fort Edmonton in 2002 (on a train trip across Canada and the US) and stumbled on the club layout by accident. I stood there looking for so long that the one member who was there figured I must be a fellow modeler and gave me the grand tour. Quite a layout. From your pictures it looks like a lot of new construction is going on.

And yes, by all means keep us posted occasionally on your progress.

Here we go then.

I've added some more photos to the Lynneton Yard and the loft layout (BM&W) sets. No descriptions for these yet, and some of them are not in order (when I uploaded to fotopic I had it set to show latest photos first so had to load with the latest number first if you see what I mean). It looks like its going to take a long time to get all of them updated.

My main priority is top get the photos which I can use to access from anywhere. Please bear with me I will get around to getting some sort of order from the current chaos

In the meantime enjoy the photos at

On 3/22/2011 7:16 AM Mike Hughes spake thus:

I haven't had a chance to look at your "photostream" (Flickr terminology) yet.

But before you go too far down that road (Flickr), you might want to consider a few things. Flickr's pretty good for photo storage, but as always, there are some "gotchas":

  1. They impose a limit on the number of photos you can have posted (200, I think), unless you buy a "pro" account.
  2. They also do not allow you to rearrange photos within your "photosteam". They go there in the order you uploaded them.

Now, they do give you some features that allow you to organize photos, like albums, etc. But you might want to look at other free online photo storage sites and compare them before you get too invested. I use Photobucket, and like their system. Might or might not work for you.

I've already upgraded to the 'pro' account as I have so many photos to put back up. No limit on the numbers and I can put up larger file sizes

I've found that out :-( However, by putting the photos into a set I can put those into any order I wish. That's the best way to look at them - at least for the older lot I'm putting on first.

I did briefly look at some of the others but, having suffered once, I decided on flickr because with a large organisation behind them they are less likely to go out of business (famous last words)

Thanks for taking an interest. Please keep looking in as I upload my photos. Just bear with me when it comes to adding descriptions. It will happen but slowly.

Another benefit to doing your thing on your own website is that it is easy to transfer it to another host at a later date if that becomes necessary. I once transferred the entire web site for a community theatre (with historical data and photos) to a new site and had it up within 24 hours after the old host's server crashed.

I'm gradually getting my photos uploaded to flickr. The latest lot were all taken of my loft layout.

I've tried to put these together as a set which can be viewed as a slide show. Not all of them have captions yet, and I still have to get some of them in the correct order.

Can you please have a look and let me know what you think

Please feel free to add comments to the photos. I'm still on the learning curve with flickr so the more feedback I can get the better.

Thanks

P.S. It will also give the 'new' visitors coming to see the layout next week some idea of what to expect - except there's been more work carried out on it recently so they may not recognise some parts of it.

The photos are fine, except that they could be just a wee bit smaller - say 10%. They seem to be a bit too large, at least for my screen.

But I can't wait to see how you're going to get a backdrop on that layout :-).

This has been discussed to death on uk.railway and is no longer a topic of discussion.

BTW, uk.railway has a couple of hundred posts per day Vs one or two on this forum.

And this group is used by people who want to see American model railway pictures - not UK. There are some who were following my fotopic site and I want to get back to that situation but I'm still on the learning curve.

If you have some positive comments, especially about using flickr, I'd be grateful for your help.

I'm also wondering how to do that :-)

I have a few ideas, based upon things that other loft layout builders have done. In fact I'm going to visit one this coming Wednesday. I will be taking the camera and intend to post them (in a different sub folder) if you're interested in seeing how someone else has solved the problem.

I've also re-ordered to photos in the loft layout set and added a few more descriptions if you're interested. They now appear in chronological order so you can see how things came together.

Thanks for taking an interest and for your positive feedback. I appreciate it
