Hey, let's do this thread again.

Gosh, with all the arguments about WMD's, Saddam's treatment, is Jerry really Jerry, and various other OT's, we've been neglecting some of the old-time, immortal threads.

So...

Sniping Software!!!

So, is sniping a fair tactic, or just used by nefarious Bin Laden types? LOL

Here, let me save some time... If sniping is good, it was invented in New Zealand or anywhere but America. If sniping is inherently evil, it is American.

I have a sure fire way to cut sniping short on one of a kind items I really want. I simply put in a bid that's triple what the item normally goes for. I sometimes buy RR postcards. These usually sell for maybe up to $20. So, I put in a bid for $350 on them, and I always win. People can "snipe" all they want to.

On things that are not unique, I simply put in a bid of the maximum I will pay. If someone wants to spend more, that's no big deal. I am patient and soon another one will come along, and will likely sell for less. I think this software shown has a flaw anyway--internet speed varies considerably from hour to hour, and the software might goof up and cause you to not get a bid in at all.

And if you complain about sniping you're an America basher?

But, wait a minute, what about John Mohamed and his teenage companion?

Such a confusing world, I'll just go listen to Rush Drugbaugh.

And that English gentleman who invented the breechloader rifle DIDN'T organize a group of snipers?

I'll grant he didn't take the shot at Washington he could have.

Do it; you just might end up learning something.

I think sniping is a fair tactic.

I didn't snipe at anyone, nor yet did my ancestors! We were hauled up on nice warm, sandy islands selling grog and victuals to all comers!

Unless you have to pay 4% for sniping then it is evil American and designed by the UP. HA

Kent is SD I forsee a problem with your example. I have heard there is a bid program, it may be the snipe or called something else, but a person sets up an account which can read what your maximum bid is. This is commonly used to place a snipe bid in the last seconds. However, I understand it can also be used by the seller. He establishes a second ebay account, uses the program to determine your high bid at say $350. He then uses the second account to bid $349 which then forces you to your max bid, thus maximizing his selling price. Like I said, I have only heard of these programs, I do not know if they are really out there. I have quite a bit of experience on Ebay and have been involved in several that have made me believe the program does exist or at least something like that is out there.

I'm a sniper and proud of it. After getting into a few bidding wars and driving up the price to myself, I quickly learned to wait until the last second and throw in a bid of as much as I was willing to pay. I believe I have saved myself hundreds of dollars. Anyone bidding and not being prepared to get sniped is a fool. I have also been outsniped too, but then it was by someone willing to pay more than I was. I accepted it like a man and waited for the item to pop up again. They always do. Sooner or later everyone learns to snipe.

There is NO such thing as sniping. It's just like walking into a live auction and placing a bid at the last minute...whether planned or not planned.

I agree.....I have been there, done that both as a seller and a buyer. I've seen some items I'm selling go for ridiculously high prices because of bidding wars. I have lost a few auctions because someone bid at the very last second. But, I've thrown in a bid at the last second myself, hoping to outdo the other bidders.

I don't know why everyone gets so steamed about so-called "sniping". It is exactly as though you walked into a live auction in the last few seconds, before the auctioneer says "Sold" and outbid the others.

And what about the times we've all opened our browsers, gone to look for an item on eBay, and there it is at a good price, and it's got 30 seconds or so left? I've done many hurry-up bids that way too. IS that sniping? Or is it just coming into the auction at some damn close timing?

Yeah, the d'Aubisson Terminal Line - flatcars full of Grand Cherokees with the windows blacked out trundle past garbage dumps full of headless labor leaders and nuns, while some fat guy gives the death squad leader a big abrazo and a wet smooch.

I don't use sniping software. I like to be there for the kill. Using sniping software is like deer hunting by planting land mines. Nope, I like to pull the trigger myself, even if it means getting up at 3:30 am to place my bid. Not that I do it very often, but if I really want the item, I hold off placing my "real" bid until the final 30 seconds or so.

I've really not seen ANY "wonderful" deals on Ebay... I have n-scale and really have no good stores around where I live. I just bought a bunch of MT cars at a GATS show for 6 to 12 bucks new. I've tried that on Ebay and with shipping on right back to retail or higher... What products do you all find that are such a good deal? ... or is just finding rare stuff?
