Probably the best place to ask is on the REC.MODEL.RAILROAD newsgroup. That is a group that is about as active as this group is and there are those who know about such. Personally, I'd consider train control as such to be to be contrary to the idea of operating a model railroad. Operation of things like lighting and so forth are alright. So is the control of ABS signaling on the layout.

As you mention, this is a Personal Preference; someone else may prefer what you do not!

I operate trolleycars which have schedules much more fequent than trains. I would like to set up a situation where schedules are used with automation and trolleys leave and return to the barn for rush hours, and most cars return to the barn at late night except for the few owls.

Then I can tell the computer to omit a certain run and operate that trolley manually on a schedule among other trolleys operated by computer. Much easier than fighting for floor space with a dozen other people! Or I can operate a charter among computer scheduled cars.

Tremendous amount of options here!

I see both the points mentioned here. I prefer to automate all or most of the accessories only, while running the main line manually. I would like to incorporate automated car loading using sensors for real time shunting, as well as day/night lighting, crossing signals and guard operation, (I would like to setup an HO slot car set with the layout, but can?t seem to find the car/rail track piece). The PWM supply can be built for very little compared to commercial supplies. A simple high current H-Bridge for motor control, and then a multiplexed system for multiple loco operations, merely computer chosen but manually powered. Most of the electronics is actually available in kit forms, so cost would be minimal compared to a pre-built system. Enclosing everything wouldn?t be a problem as most layouts integrate a number of buildings that could house the circuits. I was just wondering if anybody has done any of this from scratch, and to get a few ideas and directions on what works best. I was even thinking of using ATMELS or PICs for control, rather than a complete PC.

Any ideas?
