Re: Ho Engines Cheap!!!

You have to remember, America was founded by religious fundamentalists and malcontents (I'm talking 1600s here), and I guess we've been a fairly conservative lot ever since. Maybe not, but I've seen people get their knickers in a knot here over stuff that people wouldn't bat an eyelash at in Europe or Japan. Your supposition may be correct.

And as for Carville being far left (my observation), perhaps I'm just hitting the extreme pieces. As I said, I read him only occassionally, like when there's notoriety involved, and that usually means an extreme viewpoint or a hotbutton issue. I usually tend to stay from editorials and columnists as a general rule. But I do like to read Richard Roeper in the Chicago Sun-Times, and Dave Barry is a hoot.

I haven't heard that mantra since Sept. 10, 2001.

Uhhh, taxes burdens almost doubled under Tommy Thompson. Isn't he a Republican?

Move to the Chicago burbs. Your state tax will be a flat 3%. Your property will cost twice as much and your electricity and gas will cost at least 50% more. Traffic will be gridlocked east-west through most of Lake County, Cook County gridlocked period.

Taxes may suck in Wisconsin, but I can vote for the legislature. I can't vote for who sits on the board at Commonwealth Edison and North Shore Gas in Illinois and asks for rate increases all the time.

I'll take Wisconsin, TYVM. At least the roads are better.

Who was baited into it by a Catholic Cardinal because he needed an attention-getter to win an election he was bound to lose? He had no real evidence of infiltration. A lot of people joined the Socialists in the 30s. So what?

Wasn't he surrounded by bunch of no-balled politicians from other states who didn't call his bluff when uttered his famous "I have here in my hand a list of Communists..." speech with a bunch of blank paper in his fist?

It finally took one senator to say "Shame on you, Mr. McCarthy." and his house of cards came tumbling down.

Read the biography. It's interesting stuff.

By "your", I was refering to the USa.

All of that.

No, you're a victim of my ambiguous statement ;-)

I wouldn't know a Wisconsinite from a New Yorker, just as I imagine you couldn't pick an Aucklander from a Cantabrian - I can read some of your legislation however

- it having been put forward by some of our rabid right politicians as their avowed goal. It's extremist outlook gives me something tangible to judge Wisconsonites by.

You're applying your own standards and insisting they are also everyone elses, they are not.

This a crock. The problem is that taxes are too high for most people and too low for a select minority. It's a con job. Let the states get together and decide what the lowest tax level they need is and set the level at that in all fifty states.

If you take away the ability for people and businesses to shop for tax rates then you no longer have the states in competition with each other over that issue.

Sure, the earthquake was centered in a fairly unpopulated region. The nearest town (Te Anau) suffered stock fallen from shop shelves and some cracked chimneys. There's a group of four trampers unaccounted for much closer to the epicenter - they weren't expected out for several days yet. Near the coast there's evidence of waves at mature tree-top level and a few mountains have revised shapes. Most of the region is semi-vertical and bush covered. ("bush" in New Zealand terms is sub tropical rainforest, dense enough that experienced people get lost 2 metres from a track)

In America you generally find the Christian fundamentalists, Protestant as well as Catholic, LOVE Bush. It's mostly his pro-life stance I think.

I never bought the "Iraq has/will have an ICBM" theory.
