The Titanic carried mail, the Royal Mail. Since it was forward and stowed rather deep, it was some of the first to receive damage. My understanding is that RMS meant "Royal Mail Ship" in the beginning, but may well have become "Royal Mail Steamer" as the mails shifted to the faster, more reliable steamers.
