Hi! My 4 x 8 work-in-process is barely out of the gridwork stage. And, the Mission Plan, as I call it, is a fictional, very small shortline privately owned by the local industries, farms and ranches in a small farming and industrial area in southern Arizona, at present times. A co-op was formed and various grants were made and bonds sold, but still the industries could only afford second hand equipment and diesels.

Which short, switching diesels, 0-4-0's or 0-6-0's would most likey be used by a small mine, warehouse, factory, farm supply house, oil storage facility, light manufacturing business, cattle feed lots, etc. etc. This, considering the sharp curves in the 4 x 8 G&D. I built one in N scale but my eyes rebelled so I donated it and I'm starting all over in HO.

The plan is for the switcher to collect all outgoing cars and place them on an outgoing spur. Then the big guy, (from the big city) comes down with a dozen cars, or so, and drops them off on an incoming spur. He then picks up the cars from the outgoing spur and takes off for far away places. Then the switcher sorts out the incoming cars and delivers them to the local business.Of course they each do a little show-off trip around the mainline a few times .

Thanks for any suggestions....I'm almost ready to roll! Mike Picture Rocks, AZ

Huh!? 0-4-0? ... 0-6-0? I've never seen diesels described thus. Aren't those steam designations?

Grammer flame aside, I like the idea of a steam switcher in modern times. Every layout I've planned (and there have been many, one of these days I might even build one) has been set in the present but used a steam switcher at the coal mine. After all, the fuel is right there!

Unfortunately Mike, I can't help you with loco recommendations. I'm partial to the bargain boxes at shows and swap meets (it is a cash strapped short line, remember) but I assume you're after something more reliable.

No "flame" was intended, just true puzzlement over what was being asked. If the OP takes it as such, then I apologize.

I am using a GE 44 tonner for that very purpose. The Short Line RR I am modeling only had one engine and it was a 44 tonner. They also had a small

0-4-0 Tank engine prior to the 44 tonner. Bachmann is the only one manufacturing them right now. The nice thing is doesn't have to run backwards as both ends are the front. I use 16" radius curves and hide them behind open cuts with lots of trees. Works well. Have fun and enjoy it. Chuck Callaghan snipped-for-privacy@virginia.edu

I understand that the Bachman Spectrum 0-6-0T is a good runner. I plan on getting one as soon as the budget allows :-).

Since you like switching, do a google on "Inglenook switching puzzle" - it's pretty simple to incorporate into a layout and look like a normal small yard, and it's a lot more varied than a Timesaver.
