Train order board colors

I need to paint a train order board for a depot I'm building, except I don't know what colors to paint the targets. This particular model looks sort of like a "figure 8" on its side and is mounted on a mast with a signal light. The whole mechanism is mounted via bracket directly to a depot.

The ones I have seen like that are painted with one pair of "paddles" white, and the other ones red. They should be painted the same color on both sides of the paddles, so that when the white side is visible from the engineer's point of view, it is visible as white in both directions, and ditto for the red.
