ok you guys probably already know this - but i discovered a few years ago that you can make great stationary engine belts out of car tyre sidewall. Cut it with a stanley knife (you can have just about any width you want (but the actual belt size is a little limited as you are restricted by the tyre diameter). In theory the belt has one edge longer than the other, but as it is very elastic, it doesnt matter
