Gentlemen,
Tomorrow I am on a delivery run to Internal Fire, I am
taking a Single cylinder Pelapone, a large well pump, several boxes of
electricery, a large filing cabinet and anything else Dan Howden and I could
get in the van. On the way there I am collecting for a friend two BSA
Gensets from just inside the Welsh Borders. I am stopping the night at the
museum to be there for the New Years Crank Up and then returning late on the
1st of Jan with a Lister K for Miley Bob of Hull way, if another friend can
get the details I might also be stopping at Swansea to collect a pair of
Lister DK's.
Because of the above I am taking this opportunity to wish you all a Happy
and Prosperous (!) New Year a day early especially as I will not have a
computer to hand.
If you are going to IF I will see you there.
Martin P
Bon Voyage and have a safe trip.
I 'hope' the 'BSA' gennies are in fact Chore-Horse units, but all will be
revealed when you get them.

You guys deserve some recognition for the work you do for this hobby.
Eric Brain once approached me as a potential 'profiles' subject for SEM
(me, who doesn't rally and has never 'restored' an engine in the usually
accepted sense of the word!), if he still lurks in these parts I hope he
might think that there is more promising material to be found in you.
NHH
Nick,
I do correspond with Eric on occasion, that is until my last computer crash
which means I don't have his email at the moment (hint Eric)
I don't do what I do for any glory and neither does Dan, I (we) do it
because it means we can help a museum get along without worrying about how
to fetch and carry stuff. In relation to other volunteers I only scratch the
surface. Paul has to rely on volunteer help because like all museums of the
type funding is very difficult if not impossible to come by and if I can
save him a couple of pounds then something else gets done. On a selfish note
I get to play when there as well so I get my kicks as well.
This year Dan made a decision to give work a rest and has spent a week at a
time there and is going again soon, as I said I only scratch the surface.

Gentlemen,
I'm back home again after a very cold -5C during the day and b****y freezing
during the night, I did have an oil filled radiator in my bedroom of the
caravan which kept it nice but in the morning in the kitchen area of the
caravan I got my little stove which uses aerosol cans with the gas in going
and within seconds it had frozen and no gas would come out so a primus I
carry was used, Paul the one you gave me in October.
We had a small panic first thing yesterday morning when Paul found all
incoming water from the mains was frozen solid so nothing to put in the
engines apart from those we had filled by 10 gal bottle the night before,
eventually a line of hose pipe was laid out from the house to use that
supply but that had its limits as it is spring fed into a tank so we could
not drain that.
Hazel organised the Cawl, the lumpiest soup you could imagine steaming hot
as well in a large container that took two large men to shift from the
house to the museum shop.
There was also a steady plod of the public during the day and they seemed to
enjoy them selves watching us try and start some of the engines,
particularly the JP4 Gen set the Gary and I delivered in October. Paul had
reassembled it and had it running but yesterday four men, two on the
starting handle and two on slings could not get it past compression of one
cylinder set on half compression.
I got to start the six cylinder pelapone engine, Paul had me cranking it
over with no joy when he announced to the viewing public " oh dear I had
better switch on the mag" by which time I was buggered.
Anyway on my way home I stopped half way to pick up the two Lister D's and I
have put some pics up to show what I can get in my van.

I took no pictures at the museum as we were busy all day and I forgot to
fetch my camera from the van.
Martin P
Martin, looking at the photos it must have been in your mind that it would
be a more that usually good idea not to Hit Something on the way home! If
that lot came forward to see you it would be better than anything Mr Atkins
could come up with! ;o))
It must have made you smile to put aside the modern stove & use an older
model!
Regards,
Kim.
I'm wondering why you/they were trying to pull it over compression?
Yers it can be a valid starting method - I used to drive a JP2-engined
railway loco & that was the easiest way to start it in warm weather,
partly because the decompressers weren't easy to reach, but generally
decompressing would be the easiest way. When my JP3 genset was in
regular use I could start it singlehanded unless it was extremely
cold, when a second pair of hands would be very welcome.
Tim
Kim,
If you look forward I have racking and a bulk head between the engines and
me, the biggest lump the K type had a restraining strap to anchor points in
the van to hold it back and the D's were a tight fit so no chance of coming
forward.
Martin P
Gentlemen,
I have been a little busy the last two days, Mike Henriksen came and
collected his two Lister D's, I did remark at the time that he might not get
one in his trailer but with a little jiggering we got both in, Dan dropped
by loaded with a Lister CS in his trailer today for a cup of tea and a bit
of trading and left here with Mike Milestone's Lister K in his van and some
orange fencing and a submersible pump for Paul at IF and this afternoon I
delivered the two Gen sets to Peter Forbes. The van feels very light and
springy now but tomorrow after a sweep of the inside I will put back all my
work equipment, that will settle her down again
