Collecting and Fetching

Gentlemen,

Today I have become the proud owner of what I consider as a very original petrol/paraffin Lister M. I delivered an engine to a gentleman in Wisbech then went across to my good friend Dan Howden to collect the Lister. I have been politely warned about painting it so will leave well alone as it is :-)) It has what I have never seen on a Lister engine before and that is water injection, so another trolley has to be made, another friend of mine insists that this one will have to be wooden not metal. tomorrow when the light returns I shall take some pictures and put them in the usual place.

How many of you have had this conversation,

"Youve got it then", yes " what is it", its a Lister M petrol paraffin. "Oh!" "what does it do", its an engine dear " I know that but what does it do". "does it go", no not yet "You paid all that money and it does'nt go, you were seen coming", it doesn't work like that dear " waste of money, mutter mutter mutter" and she walks back into the house :-)) The pictures are in the usual place .

Interesting engine Martin, not so simplistic as A's and B's. Does it go - ish?

Space is our problem and I ran out of it several engines ago. Now the Inter looms large in my work calendar, I've got to move iron to build iron.

"What have you bought now?" "It's a Badger's Bottom engine, the only one of its kind in seven shires and, well, " (weakly) "it's only a little one." "Yes, but it's ANOTHER little one. At least you've got rid of The Eyesore" (the lamented Parsons) "Where are you going to put this one?" "In the garage down the bottom." "There's no room. Look, why don't you put it in the kitchen, it's warm, dry and you'll need to degrease the bits - you could use the sink & then my new oven for stove enamelling experiments."

Did you spot where reality gave way to fantasy?

Actually, I've gotta say she is pretty good. She brought me a cup of tea in bed on Tuesday morning and reminded me that we met forty years ago that day. We must quite like each other ;o))

Kim, Its not seized, the valves are stuck open at moment and I don't yet know about the mag, but a quick visit to my friend Martin Percy will sort that one out. I have to get my head around the intricate plumbing for the petrol and paraffin. Its more than likely to be next winters project as I am busy with the L at the moment or I was until I had to repair my Welder with a new wire feeder unit. I will send a letter to Mr Edgington for a date, I believe 1920's, if anybody has four stout wheels I would like to hear from you please.

The engine is definitely pre-1920, my list from SEM many years ago gives

1920 starting at about S/N23000. The entire engine has a good coat of originality on it, just mount it on two lumps of old pitch pine soaked in creosote, oil and grease and it will be a nice exhibit.

That's a nice lump, Martin. Definitely a paraffin restoration job. One of those engines I've had on my wish-list for a while.

I still remember with amusement the look on my ex's face when she came home and opened the dishwasher to find a tractor dashboard being cleaned for painting.

In my Other Hobby, all warriors start their military service with spear and shield: thus it is usual for car buyers to take a nine foot spear with them when buying a new vehicle. So aging Volvos become quite attractive .............

Gentlemen,

Just a follow up on my Lister M, the engine was made in 1919 to be precise

24/01/1919 to be delivered to Drake and Fletcher 0n the 18/02/1919. Intrestingly David Edgington mentioned in his letter to me that the engine had the option to be fitted with a table on the Vaporiser to carry a blowlamp to aid starting.
