Why?
As far as I know the parts are made to normal manufacturing tolerances and then selectively assembled. The broader the tolerances the more you have to make to get a suitable pair.
If the cams are a bit odd there is some scope to "even" things out with the phasing and calibration.
Elements and nozzle parts are lapped for fit and finish, basically done by a machine these days, but was the big hurdle to get over in the first place, of getting a pump to work properly and for long lengths of time.
Bosch would have provided machinery and technicians to Mico.

When Guzzi vee twins were new stuff in the '70's, a mate of mine discovered that the points at £7.00 a pop were identical to those fitted in a then current Fiat at .35p each.
The Fiat dealer mentioned in passing that they sold them by the box load to the local Guzzi dealer.
I bet they did ...................
