No keyway!

I wanted to avoid having to cut the taper myself as; a) tapers are rather critical so its no use relying on the grotty angle markings on the average top slide, and b) how the hell do you hold a sprocket in the chuck?

A good illustration of the ever widening gap between costs for mass produced items & one-off work!

I'd guess 'they' have quoted a minimum 1 hour, possibly plus their own mark-up if they are not doing the work themselves. May not be too bad a deal if a new keyway has to be cut in the taper.

Thanks for that Tom, I always seem to have a bit of a mental block when it comes to jobs where special fixtures or tooling need to be made up - laziness I suppose. But faced with the prospect of saving £35 I will certainly have a go.

Machine a ring to suit the sprocket diameter then cut with a hacksaw so you have a spring collet of sorts. Wall thickness needs to be at least .25" Can be handy to machine a step both inside an out to abut both the sprocket against and the chuck jaws.

If you have the old sprocket that can be chucked to set the compound angle by using a DTI on the bore.

If not, set the angle correctly by using boring scrap and adjusting to suit. Better to cut scrap than scrap sprocket..
