Thinder and lighteneing and BSA

Well I blame Martin for raising the thread about thunder storms. We had a couple of good ones here last night. I've never seen lightening strike horizontally from cloud to cloud before. The flashes were so close, it was difficult to count the time between them and their bangs as there was another flash in the interval so knowing which flash made which bang was impossible. Anyway, at about midnight, our local electric co left the competition and we lost power. This morning we were still off and I didn't fancy a cold shower so a source of mains had to be found. Out came my old BSA generator set. A top up of fuel away we went. There are times when the other half is glad I'm interested in this stuff.

We lost power for three hours this afternoon evening, I considered getting my gennie up and running but the cost of a call and free delivery of a Chinese meal proved cheaper :-))

We had an electric storm last night for about an hour and had vertical and horizontal strikes from the same clouds. Did you not learn anything in your science lessons at school, a cold front has a different polarity to a warm front so when they meet it goes with a bang :-)) Today's storm was missed because I was to busy trying to see where I was going in the resulting monsoon that fell down with it.

One of the things I learned in science at school was how to make ammonium iodide, a source of much amusement throughout my teenage years ;o))

I love thunderstorms ! I had great fun connecting my short-wave antenna ( 75' long wire ) to a flourescent tube, with the other end earthed, and watching it flash away merrily whenever a strike occurred within a few miles. The neighbours kids call me the mad scientist ! WORD OF WARNING THOUGH.......If anyone is tempted to try it DO NOT touch the antenna wire.....the voltages induced can be lethal...or at best you would jump through the roof !
