A good link for those with an interest in the big bird. Mike.H

Hi Mike, Why is it OT? Surely Concords engines are as stationary as any you can find. 8^)

==================================================== That bings me to a question I was going to ask before the OT thread . Here is your starter for 10 ---- What is the definition of a stationary engine ?. For instance is an engine on a wheeled trolly genuinely stationary as is say an engine firmly bolted to a concrete base or should it be termed "a portable" Mike.H.

It doesn't do to analyse the term to closely, however, for the purposes of SEM (and I guess for this group), may I suggest the following:-

A 'Stationary Engine' is any engine the primary purpose of which is not propulsion, excluding hot fog, not for any logical reason, but because it is so well covered elsewhere.

There, pick the bones out of that one ;-)

Mike.H.

Gordon Wright tortures himself over this from time to time, but it's always seemed perfectly clear to me.

The term "stationary engine" is used to describe reciprocating internal combustion engines whose power output is not used for moving the engine itself. In this term, the use of internal combustion is implied and not stated separately.

However, "Stationary engine" may be also be applied to external combustion engines, although it is common usage to add a description of the heat ource - i.e. "steam stationary engine". A similar position exists in respect of turbines used in this context

Not sure we should rule out Fichtel and Sachs :-) as to other parts of the question. If its bolted to concrete its plain stationary, on skids would be semi-portable and a trolley borne engine is portable. OTOH Douglas for example described the FT35 genny set as portable. Hah!! ttfn Roland

So the APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) on an aeroplane is a stationary engine?

"> A 'Stationary Engine' is any engine the primary purpose of which is not

Yep, I'd say so. SEM has after all covered ABC APU's in the past.

Hi Nick, I am in discussion with their tech support at this very minute. I did what it told me but it won't work. The reason is

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Effective from 2004-02-16 (Monday), you will not be able to use our news service under the name "News.CIS.DFN.DE" anymore. This name will be for sole use by participants of the "DFNNetNews" project (DNN) only." The server name you need is news.individual.net. "IMPORTANT NOTES: User names and passwords will work unchanged! There is no need for new registration or reregistration! There will be no changes on the news spool or the article numbering! All you have to check and - if necessary - change is the name under which you access our news server!" See

this to happen on my birthday! I will let you know what happens.

That was painless, would have been nice to have been warned though. Happy birthday Dave.

Hi Nick, All you have to do is change the newsgroup to news.individual net. It wouldn't work for me because I hadn't ticked the "My server requires me to log on" Box. Then it asks for the password.

"Roland and Celia Craven" wrote (snip):-

My favourites are those old catalogue illustrations showing some vast engine on a couple of wooden skids cut into handles at each end. Mind you, with Kim on one end and Wild and Wolsely Scotsman on the other, it would probably go in the back of a Volvo!

So lawn mower engines are not Stationary Engines. That should please Kim but it upsets my B&S which is now driving a generator. I also see a number of Lister and Petter engines driving dumper trucks. I do agree though that there doesn't seem to be a definition that covers the subject.

John

Ah, but is the *primary* purpose of a lawn mower engine to propel it or to drive the blades? (And just how many angels can dance on the head of a pin!)

An announcemnet was made in alt.free.newsservers on the 11th Feb 2004 and there have been other announcements refering to the changes and the reasons for about the last six, possibly 12 months. alt.free.newsservers is the correct place for these announcements...

I'll admit it caught me as well but I was aware that some chnages where happening and just wandered over to the web site and found that news.cis.dfn.de was no more, made a quick edit to my leafnode config and Robert was my fathers brother.

Not an NG I subscribe to I'm afraid. Is it fun?

Not if some of the engine power is used to move the mower but not all do. You can get push rotary lawn mowers.

But that is now stationary, unless the output of the generator drives a motor to drive the whole thing along... B-)

So? What has a makers name got to do with it? The KISS defintion seems to me that a stationary engine is one where none of it's output is used to move the engine.

The fact that the location of the engine is 35,000' AGL and doing

500mph isn't particulary relevant. If it is then *no* engine is "stationary" as we are all hurtling through space as some frightening number of miles per second...

Donno, never looked. B-)

Hmmm, lawnmowers eh? In this case, I think we might ask "Does the engine drive the blades alone or provide motive force as well?"

The latter being the case, then it is clear that the engine is not a stationary engine any more than a similarly derived marine engine might be. Although they may have stationary brethren, if they move under their own power they cannot be classed as stationary.

I blink, therefore I'm ham.

Kim Siddorn

PS - Next week, I'm to acquire another Norman engine which will make three. Just my luck that as a Saxon I should put my workshop in the way of a Norman invasion ;o))
