Zwicky

This months Aeroplane has a splendid pic of a bowser refuelling Hurricanes. It shows very well the Zwicky Lister A which appears to have the spark arrester and a long, asbestos lagged, exhaust going through the bowser floor. The floor has cut-outs for the flywheels which suggests that the Lister was not the original engine for the bowser or perhaps more likely that engines were not part of the original design. ttfn Roland

Refuellers had hand-cranked pumps originally, but with small tanks it wasn't a problem until the mid 1930's when engines jumped in capacity and hp. Strange that JAP weren't selected for the job, being located in London and nearer than Dursley.

My father was in the RAF as an LAC, and I was fortunate to inherit a lot of his study books and other literature when I became old enough to appreciate them and not destroy them :-)) he died when I was 3 months old so I never knew him, he is now buried in a Commonwealth war Grave in Bandon Hill near Croydon. He was still in the RAF when he died, after the war ended.

Zwicky have a long history of bowsers and other tanker products, David edgington has featured various of their items in his SE column over the years.
