I'm thinking of getting a Hornby Toby and trying to make it look a bit more like a real loco, I.e. an LNER J70. I guess a good start could be made by cutting off the face and drilling out the doors and windows. Has anyone tried this? Would the internal mechanism be really obvious if the doors were opened up and if so could it be hidden behind some crew? Any thoughts?

Don't bother! VERY over scale...
I converted an Ertl Toby to an HO scale J70 using a spud unit and a complete new underframe. I guess that doesn't help you at all(?)

Thanks for the info. I don't want an accurate J70, just a representation of a tram type loco that looks a bit less toy like. Is the Hornby model so big that it would look silly hauling a train of other OO stock? Could I get away with opening out the doors and windows?
