Canadians usually leave out the "a" in an "ae" diphthong - and sometimes the "o" in an "oe" diphthong, too: "esophagus", but "oenophile". Did you know "ecumenical" should really be "oecumenical"?
This a matter of regional dialects - the "rhotic" and the "non-rhotic." The former add "r-colouring" long vowels. The latter may omit r-colouring even on vowels where you would expect it (as "car".)
What I can't fathom is why people write "women" for "woman."

No, "draw" for "drawer", which is at least intelligible when you consider how some people pronounce the word. And it's been a long time since I thought of panties when I heard talk about drawers. Hah!
But you just said they carried them in their packs. (for special occassions?)
