Good point - building baseboard frames as a teenager probably did more for my woodwork ability than CDT lessons in secondary school ever did! Likewise, soldering skills learnt when wiring layouts have proved useful to this day (my current job involves R&D work in the field of scientific instrumentation, so I'm called upon now and again to lengthen test leads, make fiddly modifications, that sort of thing).
