Bachmann 4MT Mogul 76069

Just got my long awaited Standard 4MT Mogul today, to my eye in all but one respect it's a lovely loco.

That one respect? The connector between loco and tender can either be too wide, or non existant. Now, I'm one for getting as close to scale as possible, but the ability to run comes before absolute realism. On the closer setting there is no gap, and I mean no gap, between the tender's 'buffers' and the loco. Simply none at all, meaning the loco won't go round any corners! To add insult to injury, the gap on the wider setting is like having the grand canyon between loco and tender.

Methinks a new connector betwixt loco and tender is required (or at least a change of the hole positions on the existing one). Unfortunately I can't see any different connector in the details pack, unlike the Ivatt 2MT Mogul released earlier in the year.

I don't know about this loco specifically, but if you say that the 2MT had alternative connectors might it be just a packing error? You could try contacting Bachmann or your dealer, if you haven't already.

Hi-lited in the modelling press recently. Bachman are reportedly looking at the problem.

Remove the buffers on the FRONT of the tender and I'll think you'll find that make a significant difference. They're all but invisible anyway when close coupled.

It's funny you should mention that. I was just looking at those and wondering about cutting them down. However, I first wondered if any business out there produces working tender buffers, i.e. sprung ones (I am presuming the prototypes had springs or hydraulics of some kind)?

They would indeed be sprung on the prototype.

Another option of course is to manufacture a modified draw bar, slightly increasing the distance of the 'closer' coupling option.
