I note you're claiming copyright on your scans of timetable excerpts. AFAIK, the copyright remains with the original issuer, for all forms of reproduction of the timetable.

Just thought you'd like to know.

I am not claiming copyright but the person who gave them to us is.

OK, but he/she can't claim copyright either. The rights belong to whoever issued the timetables originally, for the usual term (50 years after issuing, currently.)

General principle: you can't claim copyright in a reproduction of a copyrighted source. You can however claim copyright in some uses of a copyrighted/trademarked images, eg, inclusion of a Coca Cola sign in a photograph of, say, a street scene does not infringe copyright or trademark rights. But a photograph of a Coca Cola sign as such may. You can also use copyrighted/trademarked images as content for a satirical or other "fair comment" work. Etc. It's really quite complicated.

FWIW, there are international consultations going to harmonise international copyright and intellectual property protection laws, generally in line with US law and practice, which is the most restrictive on the planet. If you have an opportunity, bend your MP's ear about it. In particular "fair use" will be severely restricted, which affects this and similar forums. Also, patent protection will be widened to include potential and unforeseen extensions of a patentable invention, which will discourage innovation. That should worry everybody.

One other perhaps not so small point: Some web-service providers claim ownership of any and all material uploaded to the websites they provide to you. This trend appears to be spreading. It may include web-based mail service. Read a web site contract very carefully!
