Is it easy to have a lid designed for your base board which will allow you to covet the entire track and protect it when not in use?
The lid would need to have walls I suppose to give it the height needed.

Shouldn't be too difficult. You need to have somewhere to stow the lid when it is open or removed.
We have a lid on High Gables (club layout about 4ft x 2ft). "Walls" are softwood, top is very thin ply. We bolt through the walls into the baseboard for transportation and storage. The layout (purporting to be Hoch Giebeln) is at the St Albans show on 10th & 11th January, if anyone wants to see how its done.
But there must be a limiting size to lids. I think it is with one person attempting to replace the lid. The width is wrist to wrist, the length is the ability to control the moment of the lid.
Personally I think 6ft x 4ft would be too large for one man replacement. Another option is an open frame covered by a redundant bedsheet.
