Roco Auto Couplers

What are they? How do they work? Are they any good?

DCC controlled couplers. Press a function button and uncouple.

Additional DCC function triggering very small electro magnet.

Good question, never used 'em

They are close couplers (ie they form a rigid bar between coupled stock). They are compatible with NEM hook and moving loop couplers.

They are operated via DCC function (ie not analogue operable) A coil is mounted on the coupler shank (visible) which moves an iron component on the lifting loop. It would be nicer to have the actuating loop within the loco rather than external.

They work fine.

The way I read the current ROCO calalogue they are only supplied fitted to the new 060 DB shunter, but may be wrong. Try MacKay Models,

or phone Ken on 01418879766.

Good luck.

They come on a couple of specific locos, you can only get them as spare parts.

Does anyone else make a DCC controlled coupler?

Maerklin has had their "Telex" coupler since 1958 - it has been available since around 1990 controlled by a Digital function . It is of course an integral part of the specific locos.

How about a different approach? Make your own uncouplers and mount them in your wagons/coaches. This would work best/cheapest with fixed rakes of coaches. You would need a simple decoder with two functions, (front/rear) two low current (50-100ma) coils consisting of fine varnished wire wound on a short length of iron nail, and a linkage from the moving part of your coupler to near the coil. the linkage could be a piece of paper clip. If your locos have complete Tri-ang type couplers you might want to remove the coach hook and have the loop drop away.

It's something for you to think on :-)

I suffer from laziness and ineptness though ;)

I'm surprised that there is this gap in the market to be honest.

The big increase in available addresses certainly opens up a potential market!
