I was always under the impression that it was the acronym for 'Self Propelled Advertising Material', so shouldn't it then be SPAM or S.P.A.M.?

What Spam ?! Try adding spam to your custom dictionary. :~)

Probably the latter, certainly not the former, that is a trade-mark - look at a can of Spam or SPAM as it is printed on the can.

In the main that's true, and I can't understand why it would be different, but I'm sure that some of it's done manually, especially the notorious South African scam connection.

Actually it is *Spam*, the reason why is that it comes from the Monty Python song of that name. The phrase "Spam" became associated with useless, content less and unwanted Usenet posts when a chap posted the Monty Python Spam song to Arpanet the precursor of the Usenet as we know it today.

It is unwanted posts / emails is *spam*.

*Spam* (or SPAM) is a trade-marked name for a product containing chopped Pork and Ham.

Different meanings, same spellings.

Indeed, I've done it before and suddenly wondered why I couldn't see the posts of many people I know! :-(

So deal with you own spam, don't use potentially valid (how ever unlikely it seems) email address, not only could someone actually own the address but the email will bounce around email servers around the world trying to deliver for how ever long as the sending server is set to keep trying.

Funny that someone who actually uses snipped-for-privacy@privacy.net is telling other people off for using spam-trap addresses... 8-)

people

If you had even half a clue you would know that the owners of the privacy.net domain has given permission for anyone to use the snipped-for-privacy@privacy.net address as a spam blocking address, in short they have set filters up on their server(s) to automatically delete any mail to that address.

Funnily enough, that's precisely what I said. Why do you have to lower yourself to insults all the time? :-/ You're capable of making a valid point at times, so why be abusive?

"According to Hormel's trademark guidelines, you should spell SPAM with all capital letters and treat the mark as an adjective, following it with a more generic descriptor, for example "SPAM luncheon meat".

You have not quoted the above from Hormel's trademark guidelines, wash your mouth out with caustic soda and send an apology to Hormel, Spam is NOT luncheon meat !

SPAM is the trade mark, Spam is an acceptable official spelling of the word, or was when the previous UK licence holder held the franchise (1940's > mid to late 1990's).

Well, I changed the addresses..... and so far my daily incoming junk has INCREASED from 200 up to around 300 in the last 24 hours. I don't think it's working yet!

I scanned the system with NAV, SpyBot 1.3 and AlertSpy 1.0.8 just in case - None of them reported any 'infections'.

Looks like I've been well and truly Harvested!

Hmmm, I suspect you're doing something wrong somewhere. Have you totally dumped your old email address? I'm afraid that's one of the things you've most certainly got to do.

Just out of interest I used one of my web-based email addresses to sarcastically reply to one of the South African connection [1] scams, and within twenty-four hours that email address (which had previously been spam free) was, and continues to be massively spammed.

[1] You know the ones. "I am barrister Yoko Komolo of Nigeria and have £300,000,000 which I need to get out of the country ............................." (change name and amount in any random fashion).

And I get one or two per day. Go figure.

I like these ones.

I reply, using a Hotmail or Yahoo address, telling them I'd love to help out and all I require before we can proceed is a Good Faith Cheque in the amount of US$250.000.00. They can contact me for further information on how to deposit the Cheque into my account.

Strangely enough, I've never heard back from them. Dunno why.

OK - I have changed my 'reply ' and 'default' address to my Hotmail account and stopped checking the old one when synchronising mail. It will now just fill up with junk and bounce the lot back from now on!
