Wagon turntable in 00?

I know there is an N gauge one available (from Peco?), but does any company make a 00 version, please?

According to my Peco Catalogue of Sept 04, they do a wagon turntable in OO-9 / HOe, but not in OO/HO.

Kibri make one. The Peco N/HOm guage turntable could easily have HO track laid on top. The HOm one has the advantage that it comes with a full disk deck like TTs in industrial situations usually have. Atlas makes a 90 degree crossing so you could have the 'normal' wagon TT configuration.

You can cut a neat circle using a pair of compases - I use an engineers set that can open up to about a foot but standard school types can open to a couple of inches which should be enough - if using planked (scribed) card cut from the reverse side or the scribed lines will drag the thing off centre. There is a lot of cutting required for the flangeways so personally I'd use plain card, and use off-cuts of rail for the crossing line (notching the running line would help, representing the flangeway for the crossing rails). If you want it to work I think the Atlas crossing would be required - the wiring would be a problem if you need power on the table itself (such as if a smaller engine has to cross it) I made one (non working) many years ago using a 90 degree crossing, no idea what make but I think it was European (could be wrong though) but the rail profile was different so there was a distinct bump as the wagon rolled over the table. If you get it to work stick a pic up on the net and let us know how you did it - handy things wagon turntables.

I was thinking I'd start with the construction of the decking then cut it to add the track, but starting with a pre-formed "+" crossover is the obvious

1st step, adding in the boarding afterwards.

Would locos ever been allowed to cross waggon turntables, I imagine that most locos would have been too heavy to do so, Moving waggons on and off the t.t's was probably done by capstan, horse or manually, all most difficult to represent in model form. I have a vague memory that earlier on this subject came up, with a suggestion that an undertrack moving magnet could be used to move the waggon into the warehouse. Regards, Bill.

It's what went under a wagon turntable that would determine its ability to support a loco, and that I don't know.

The prototype for mine was at the apex of two lines meeting at a very acute angle, so through traffic by anything wouldn't have been possible.

Working examples have been made in N OO and O - The O Gauge example I recall was in RM, possibly last year, maybe the year before, the wagon was positioned and turned and (IIRC) a magnet on a rotating rod was used to collect it and draw it into the warehouse/push it back to the turntable, the N Gauge example was some time ago and I cannot recallwhere I saw it described, that one used a simple wire to slide under the wagon, rotate and the bent end pulled or pushed the wagon axle to move it, cannotrecall the details of the OO one other than they were rather shuffed they had it working.

I was wondering about having the wagons pulled by horses, but couldn't figure out how to turn them realistically.

Mount your horses on a piece of cerlloid (clear flexible plastic) Drive (push and pull) them using fine wires from inside the nearest building going through the cerlloid at the front of the horse. The horse will then trail the end of the wire. Alternatively mount them on a bar magnet and drive them using an under baseboard loco and track with another magnet mounted on the loco. (I think the under baseboard layout is going to be more interesting than the above baseboard one!) Now you just have to work out how to make the wire move to make the horse move correctly. If you want the horse to actually walk you have a rather more complex problem. I have seen a horse drawn rail coach where the horse's legs were driven by cams on the coaches front axle.

There is a working 2mm scale turntable on the exhibition layout "Queen St Goods". Operated with push-rods under the board and a magnet to move the wagon in and out of the warehouse. IIRC, one of the many 4mm layouts from the Hull MRS group had a working wagon turntable.

There was a 4mm example with a powered van providing the movement, the horse was supported on the 'chains' and had single bristles from a fine paint brush attached to its (hinged) legs, these trailed over the ballast to give a 'walking action', not wholy successful but not a bad idea.

Whilst the various suggestions for 'operating' model horses are ingenious they would all mean that the horse and the waggon would probably always have to be connected, so the same waggon would always going in and out of the warehouse. And the horse would have to back the waggon out, never seen that done in real life! Separate operating horse with a KD coupling? Regards, Bill

Coupling isn't a great problem. The pulling point prototypically was usually one of the hooks mounted on the underframe so that the horse would pull from one side. Pulling from the front would be problematical in a tight industrial situation, with numerous horses squashed against interior factory walls or boundary fences.

Given the shortage of towing hooks on our model wagons, the harness would have to be made to hook onto the W irons. Mine is simply a length of wire with the end bent at right angles (plus a fraction) With the cerrloid trailing base being a fraction wider on the away side, the harness end automatically swings into the wagon on pulling, and out when the horse and driver back up. A tiny upright piece of wire on the ground will contact the cerrloid on passing and redirect it fractionally as required. The big problem I have with my test set-up is where to place the driven end of the long wire drive, given that it has to extend at least 3 wagon lengths and my low relief building is only 3/4 wagon deep. A lineal movement of the wire is simple to hide/ignore, but an arc interfers with detail clutter on the ground.
