7018 fillet size and single/multi-run

Jun 19, 2012 0 Replies

Hi all

While since I burned a rod.

3.2mm dia (1/8th-inch) 7018 - would you go 1 run to finish for 6mm (1/4") leg-length fillet weld?

That gives a run-out 45% of the length of the rod you've burned (with

100% recovery), if I get my area calculations right. Recommendation for run-out length is 50% of rod for 7018, isn't it?

Could you speed-up the run and do same fillet size in two or three runs? If there is an optimum speed, what is the downside of running too fast to get a smaller bead?

If you are forced to multirun because the weld qualification is multirun, what would you do? Go to a smaller welding rod like 2.5mm dia (3/32nds-inch)?
