It's the same thing with the net.

Without looking through the tens of thousands of hits that your Google returned, is there one that was particularly egregious in it's mis-information?
Bob
I was being cryptic. Sorry.
I am not aware of any inaccuracy in any of those citations.
SteveB implied that the O2 lance was little more than an entertainment fiction.
I was attempting to humorously point out that instead of being a mere special-effects product, the O2 lance is actually a very useful tool, quite capable of the feat shown in the movie Ernie cited (_Thief_ with James Caan).

Actually, I understood him to be taking exception not the science of it actually being possible, but that you'd have enough oxygen from one bottle to do the job as the movie depicts, and not say, a half dozen, possibly manifolded together to get your flow rate up... --Glenn Lyford
One of the local metal scrap yards has their own LOX generator. They use a long lance and a guy in a space suit - Very thick looking and metal outside... Hood like all get-out.
He lit a news paper - got a lazy diesel fuel fire going - and turned on the WHITE fire - that is oxygen. He cut a gear that was 6' (2M) wide across it's face and at least that in diameter. Big baby. Defect of some sort from the local foundry / gear making group. He would slice though and work at the hub - then go on another 45 degree angle - doing quarters at a time. Once two were made, the crane lifted it and rotated it - set it down for the other two burns. Then lifted it up high and released the gear to break on some junk - sometimes coming apart in wedges - wanting more cutting.
It was something to watch - I was waiting on a guy to buy some steel.

Just think. He got *paid* to do that. :)

Makes a hell of a noise, too, no?

I hope he got paid well. It has to be hot in those suckers. Nothing like putting on full leathers and welding in the summer. Those have to be worse. A lot worse.

How about mid winter with a scrap pile of random junk? Man, you could charge people for the fun of going after say, a CAR with one of those lances.
It'd require training and a safety class of course.
YeeeeHa!

Oh - the scrap yard gets paid for that big time.
The foundry sells at scrap prices - but gives it to them. (exes or long term relationship).
Once there - they slice and dice and sell the quality metal at spot prices back - the gear into 4 or more bucket adding sizes.
The crane guy gets to play with it - and watchers about having fun.

As I recall kinda like a jet engine but more focused.

I just bought 80 CF of Argon last week for $31.75 plus fees.
RogerN
That's roughly what an 80 CF Argon cylinder swap costs me at my local Airgas branch. No hazmat or I/M fees either.
One time I stopped in for a swap and they didn't have an 80 CF cylinder on hand, they gave me a little 20 CF cylinder they did have at no charge so I could continue my project, and had an 80 for me later the next afternoon after their truck came in.
I really don't understand the attitude that's reported at some welding / gas places, and why they want to drive away customers.
OUCH!!
Im getting 127 CF for $27, out the door.

There is a welding place that I get my mix from, it's $20 for 80 CF but their tank was $165 for a 5 year lease then it's $65 for the next 5 years.
RogerN
That completely puzzles me.
I would really like to understand the Jekyll / Hyde thing that I see going on behind the counter, even with the same sales person from day to day. In any other context, they would be labeled 'mentally ill' yet the practice is so prevalent that it is considered normal, acceptable behavior.
Very weird.

I buy my own bottles from various sources. Damned few people that I know..and mega companies included, lease bottles. The only leased bottles Im aware of in California..are the big K sized bottles...300+ CF and those are only leased, not sold.

Yes, well the larger cylinders have always been cheaper per unit of gas. A good chunk of the cost is the handling and transport of the cylinders, not the contents. $30 for an 80 CF is still far better than the reported $80 for the same.
So why would anyone get an 80? The 127s arnt all that much bigger. I can understand if someone needs a portable bottle to haul around from job site to job site...but around the home or shop??????
Im rather baffled about that.
