Can 3/32 flux core MIG wire be used as a 'stick' for arc welding?



I was looking for 3/32 rods for my welder and I came across 3/32 flux core wire for MIG welders.



Flux on outside, flux on inside. No gas. difference?



Why not cut a 14" length of wire and burn it as a 'stick'?

This was one of my early questions too. Here's what I understand:

Stick arc welding has a solid 3/32" metal electrode on a constant-current (drooping voltage) power supply. Thus, stick welding is less sensitive to arc length. So, for manual welding, the solid electrode is better, due to the lack of control of arc length by the hand. The voltage drops from about 80 OCV to 25-40 volts with the arc established.

The flux on the INSIDE of the 3/32" wire reduces the cross-section area of that tube of metal, such that it cannot carry as much power as a solid electrode. The quantity of flux is also far less wrapped into the middle of the wire than the amount of flux covering a solid electrode.

Short answer - yes, an arc can probably be started, but the weld will be as though it is unshielded and the unsteadiness of your hand will result in wide variation in the arc length. Since there is less metal, if you keep the same amperage, the wire will be consumed much more rapidly. The flux on a normal stick electrode also serves to focus the arc when the electrode burns back faster than the flux cover. With a bare wire, the arc will jump to the nearest grounded metal, not necessarily to the weld seam. The flux covering also serves as an electrical insulator.
